Ricercatore al Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia, Università’ di Bologna, INFN e CERN, si occupa di fisica subnucleare ed in particolare degli aspetti di calcolo. Nel passato ha collaborato con il team al CERN che ha sviluppato le prime tecnologie del World Wide Web. In seguito, dal 1999 al 2008, ha insegnato "Tecnologie dell’informazione e sicurezza internazionale" presso l’Università di Pisa e ad anche "Computer and network security" all’Università di Bologna. Ha partecipato e contribuito a vari meeting e conferenze su cyber-warfare, anche presso la sede ONU di Ginevra, scrive articoli a livello nazionale ed internazionale e tiene regolarmente conferenze. Partecipa all’attività del Movimento Pugwash (insignito nel 1995 del premio Nobel per la pace) ed è co-coordinatore del Gruppo di Lavoro su “Disarmament, conflict resolution, and new weapons technology”.
The dark side of CyberWorld
The first part of the lecture is devoted to the description of the Stuxnet worm, the first cyber-weapon whose existence has been made public, discovered in 2010 and targeting a specific industrial control system; the worm is responsible for the damaging of many centrifuges at an uranium enrichment facility, with the goal of sabotaging Iran's nuclear program. In the second part, the main features of cyber-warfare in conflict and pre-conflict activities will be discussed and compared to the conventional warfare domains, with also a general view at the international political debate on this topic.
