Skills4EOSC and the professional networks of Data Stewards for the development of open science

ABSTRACT

The Skills4EOSC project (Skills for the European Open Science Commons: creating a training ecosystem for Open and FAIR science) will set up a pan-European network of competence centres aimed at implementing Open Science practices among European research communities and harmonizing the training of new professionals working to support research data management. Funded under the Horizon Europe program, the project started in September 2022, and over a three-year period, will develop methodologies, activities, and resources to unify the current training landscape into a common and trusted ecosystem, promoting the training of technical support roles in research data management and the progress of Open Science. Among its activities, the project aims to enable and support professional networks of Data Stewards, to enhance lifelong learning through peer exchange. For this reason, a survey is currently being conducted to identify professional networks throughout Europe, to address any existing gaps and enable professionals to share knowledge and best practices. The objective of mapping national data experts working in the research support comparably to data stewards, and analyzing their job description and activities has prompted ICDI (Italian Computing and Data Infrastructure) to conduct a questionnaire between April and May 2023. This questionnaire also measured the interest in participating in a national network of Data Stewards, supported by the programme.
