AI-Assisted control of optical data trasport

ABSTRACT

We will first review the abstraction of WDM in transparent optical networks and the issues related to the optimal optical control plane in partially disaggregated optical networks. Then we’ll introduce the use of machine learning models to assist optical control and data plane. For controlling, inverse machine learning techniques can be used to train a ML agent that gives a full and accurate model of the network element or subsystem. For the optical data plane, a trained machine learning agent can be used to assist quality-of-tranmission estimation for transport path computation. Experimental results on modeling the effect of an amplified optical line by exploiting machine learning will be shown. We’ll also address on cases where a data driven approach is not convenient because of non-available data. Specifically, on Raman amplification and on classification of fiber span. In this case, a cognitive approach based on evolutionary algorithms is convenient as we’ll show through experimental results.
