Policies for Research Data Management

Paola Galimberti, Jordan Piščanc and Susanna Mornati

Data Management for Research: a methodological approach

Paola Galimberti, Jordan Piščanc and Susanna Mornati

The European context sets the management of research data and their correct storage and preservation for possible future uses at the core of research integrity policies. The reproducibility of the results of published research has become central to the European Commission’s research policies, with the aim of restoring credibility to Science, undermined by long-standing bad practices and scientific frauds.

In Italy, the need for (technical and legal) guidelines, training (to create experts in Research Data Management) and, above all, of infrastructures dedicated to data harvesting, storage and maintenance is deeply felt by researchers, who often have to tackle the EC’s demands without adequate tools, precise guidelines and supporting infrastructures, while for now MIUR has not given any signs of having approached this relevant matter yet.

The Universities of Milan and Trieste, together with others, are working on a common project to test a solution for the preservation of research data that could answer the demands of diverse scientific communities. The choice for this pilot project has fallen on Dataverse, with the technical support of 4Science, a firm specialising in providing open source solutions for research.
