SESSIONE 4. CYBERSECURITY e AI

Use of the Wavelet analysis in the fraud detection process

The exponential growth of the e-commerce environment is directly related to the growth in the number of financial transactions made by credit cards, since almost all the commercial operators allow their customers to use such means of payment. This scenario has also led to the growth of fraud attempts, which are carried out in increasing numbers, in order to exploit the opportunities offered by these powerful instruments of payment, illegitimately. Literature offers an huge number of state-of-the-art techniques able to deal with this problem, but all of them have to face some well-known issues that reduce their effectiveness, such as the heterogeneity and the imbalanced distribution of the involved data. This paper presents an approach aimed to address these issues through a novel fraud detection technique based on a Discrete Wavelet Transform process. Such an approach defines its evaluation model in a transformed domain by using for this operation only the previous legitimate transactions collected by the fraud detection system. We evaluated it by comparing its performance to that of Random Forests, one of the best state-of-the-art approaches in the fraud detection context. The results show performance very near to that of its competitor, although the proposed approach operates proactively, also demonstrating the capability to reduce the cold-start issue.
