Guido Maier ha conseguito la laurea (1995) e il dottorato di ricerca (2000) presso il Politecnico di Milano. Fino al 2006 è stato in CoreCom (consorzio di ricerca sostenuto da Pirelli a Milano, Italia). Nel 2006 è entrato a far parte del Politecnico di Milano come Ricercatore. Nel 2015 è diventato Professore Associato. Le sue principali aree di interesse sono: orchestrazione SDN e architetture del piano di controllo; Ottimizzazione WAN; Orchestrazione NFV; Edge computing. È autore di oltre 200 articoli (h-index 28) e 6 brevetti. Attualmente è PI di WatchEDGE, progetto nell'ambito del Framework RESTART, finanziato dai Recovery Fund dell'UE. Nel 2016 ha co-fondato la start-up SWAN networks, spin-off del Politecnico di Milano. È editor della rivista Optical Switching and Routing, è stato General Chair di DRCN 2020 e 2021 e di IEEE NetSoft 2022, TPC Chair di IEEE HPSR 2020. È Senior Member della IEEE Communications Society.
Guido Maier received his Laurea (1995) and his Ph.D. degree (2000) at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). Until 2006 he has been with CoreCom (research consortium supported by Pirelli in Milan, Italy). On 2006 he joined the Politecnico di Milano as Assistant Professor. In 2015 he became Associate Professor. His main areas of interest are: SDN orchestration and control-plane architectures; WAN optimization; NFV orchestration; Edge computing. He is author of more than 200 papers (h-index 28) and 6 patents. He is currently PI of WatchEDGE, project within the Framework RESTART, funded by the EU Recovery Funds. In 2016 he co-founded the start-up SWAN networks, spin-off of Politecnico di Milano. He is editor of the journal Optical Switching and Routing, was General Chair of DRCN 2020 and 2021 and of IEEE NetSoft 2022, TPC Chair of IEEE HPSR 2020. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE Communications Society.

The RESTART project: RESearch and innovation on future Telecommunications systems and networks, to make Italy more smART
ABSTRACT
RESTART è un programma di partnership esteso avviato a gennaio 2023, che ha ricevuto finanziamenti dall'Unione Europea – NextGenerationEU. RESTART è stato concepito come un programma complessivo, finalizzato all'aggregazione, e all'integrazione degli sforzi dei principali stakeholder del settore italiano delle Telecomunicazioni, in diversi progetti di ricerca specifici posizionati in un quadro complessivo che fornisce una visione di lungo periodo, azioni trasversali e di supporto e strumenti e abilitatori adeguati. Punto di forza di questo programma è la cooperazione tra università, centri di ricerca, aziende e pubbliche amministrazioni, che permetterà di superare l'attuale frammentazione della ricerca e dello sviluppo attraverso azioni di coordinamento e sinergia tra iniziative progettuali. Con l'obiettivo di raggiungere risultati concreti e misurabili, è stato messo in atto uno sforzo specifico nell'individuare azioni che coprono tutte le fasi dalle idee e dalla ricerca (con basso TRL) all'innovazione tecnologica e ai servizi (con attenzione alle possibili aperture con alto TRL), e poi alla nascita e alla crescita delle imprese, trasformando i risultati della ricerca in innovazione pratica con TRL più elevato e creazione di valore per l'ecosistema delle telecomunicazioni italiano. L'obiettivo finale sarà quello di essere in grado di produrre risultati duraturi e sostenibili oltre la durata del programma.
RESTART have been conceived as a comprehensive program, targeting at aggregating, and integrating the efforts of the main stakeholders of the Italian Telecommunications sector, in various specific research projects positioned in an overall framework that provides a long-term vision, transversal and supporting actions and adequate tools and enablers [1]. The strength of this program is the cooperation between universities, research centres, companies and public administrations, that will allow overcoming the current fragmentation of research and development through actions of coordination and synergy between project initiatives. With the goal of achieving concrete and measurable results, a specific effort has been put in identifying actions that cover all phases from ideas and research (with low TRL) to technological innovation and services (with attention to possible opening with high TRL), and then to the birth and growth of companies, transforming research results into practical innovation with higher TRL and value creation for the Italian telecommunications ecosystem. The final goal will be being able to produce long-lasting and sustainable results beyond the duration of the program.
